What is the best way to run a successful book club?

Here are tips from Page & Pairing for a successful book club:

1. Choose a diverse range of books to read to keep things interesting and expose members to different genres and perspectives.
2. Set a regular schedule and stick to it to ensure consistency and accountability. For example, you may choose to meet every third Tuesday of each month.
3. Always discuss the book. Even if it wasn't the most popular pick, dedicate time to discussing the book. If you choose a Page & Pairing pick, we provide book club discussion questions or prompts to get the conversation rolling.
4. Consider using the food and drink pairings from Page & Pairing as part of your club's regular experience. It adds an extra element of fun and engagement with your group and the book.
5. Be respectful of each other's opinions and perspectives, even if they differ from your own. If you didn't read the book – don't disrupt the book discussion. Also, be prepared for spoilers if you didn't finish the book before the set meeting time.
6. When in any book club, it is important to have an open mind and be willing to try new things. Whether it's a new book or a new meeting format. We assure you there will be books you won't enjoy. However, you may be surprised to find out you love historical fiction or Stephen King!
7. Decide up front how you will choose your book recommendations for each meeting. A few options: 
   1. Allow one person to choose the books for all meetings.
   2. Take turns picking the books. 
   3. Allow members to bring recommendations for picks and go with the most popular. 
   4. Use the Page & Pairing recommendations for your meetings!
8. Rotate the hosting responsibilities among members to share the workload and keep things fresh. Some clubs do potlucks and others may meet at a restaurant. Again, keep it consistent no matter what.
9. Establish a page length maximum upfront. If you have a group of busy folks, you may want to keep the page count to 350 pages or less.
10. Keep a record of your book club books. This can aid with picking your next book if you are ever in a rut or need inspiration.
11. Have fun and enjoy the process of reading and discussing books with like-minded individuals!

What if I can't find a book club to join?

If you're unable to find a book club to join, don't worry! There are other ways for you to engage and discuss books with others. Here are a few suggestions:

1. You can join us at Page & Pairing! Sign up for our newsletter to stay updated on our book selections. We also have a Facebook group specifically for our readers to discuss our book picks and food and drink pairings.
2. Start your own book club. If you can't find an existing book club that suits your interests, consider starting one yourself. Invite friends, family, or colleagues who enjoy reading. You may even want to branch out from your regular friend group to build new relationships.
3. Engage with the bookish community on social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, or Reddit. Follow book-related hashtags or join discussions on book-focused subreddits.
4. Check with your local library for any book-related events or programs they may offer. Some libraries host book clubs or author talks that you can attend. If they don't have a book club, you can inquire if they would be open to starting one.
5. Check your local, independent bookstores or community centers if they host book clubs or reading groups.
