Remembering Dolly Parton: Books, Movies & More

Remembering Dolly Parton: Books, Movies & More

Yesterday was a sad day for the Page & Pairing family. We’re collectively mourning the loss of Dolly Parton, who was, as my colleague Jane describes, the Queen of Tennessee. Dolly was smart, funny, talented, generous and absolutely one-of-a-kind. Since our office is located in the greater Nashville area, this loss hits especially close to home.

Like many families, we’ve made memories with loved ones at her Smoky Mountain theme park Dollywood. Many of us have seen her perform live, and all of us have watched her on TV (or in the movies) at some point or another. There’s no doubt that her legacy will live on through her hospitality empire, her upcoming truck stops featuring down home cookin’ and especially Imagination Library, which distributes 1 million free books to children in Tennessee and communities nationally and internationally each month.

Here at the office, we’ll be wearing our Dolly T-shirts to work this week, and we’ll be remembering her legacy by reading these books, listening to her music and watching some of her films. For me, it’s time to re-watch 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias. Here are some of our favorite books, calendars and goodies to help you spread Dolly’s love to your friends and family. Dolly, we will always love you.

“I’m not offended by all the dumb blonde jokes because I know I’m not dumb … and I also know that I’m not blonde.” — Dolly Parton

Dolly on Dolly: Interviews and Encounters with Dolly Parton

by Randy L. Schmidt

isbn: 9781641600040,template: list

"Nobody knows Dolly like Dolly," declares Dolly Parton. Dolly's is a rags-to-riches tale like no other. A dirt-poor Smoky Mountain childhood paved the way for the buxom blonde butterfly's metamorphosis from singer-songwriter to international music superstar. The undisputed "Queen of Country Music," Dolly has sold more than 100 million records worldwide and has conquered just about every facet of the entertainment industry: music, film, television, publishing, theatre, and even theme parks.

It's been more than 50 years since Dolly Parton arrived in Nashville with just her guitar and a dream. Her story has been told many times and in many ways, but never like this. Dolly on Dolly is a collection of interviews spanning five decades of her career and featuring material gathered from celebrated publications including Rolling Stone, Cosmopolitan, Playboy, and Andy Warhol's Interview magazine.

Also included are interviews which have not been previously available in print. Dolly's feisty and irresistible brand of humor, combined with her playful, pull-up-a-chair-and-stay-awhile delivery, makes for a fascinating and inviting experience in downhome philosophy and storytelling. Much like her patchwork "Coat of Many Colors," this book harkens back to the legendary entertainer's roots and traces her evolution, stitching it all together one piece at a time.

by Martha Ackmann

isbn: 9781250286857,template: list

A larger-than-life new biography of country music legend and philanthropist Dolly Parton.

In Ain't Nobody's Fool: The Life and Times of Dolly Parton, Martha Ackmann chronicles the life of an American Original. From her impoverished childhood in the Smoky Mountains to international stardom as a singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman, and philanthropist, Dolly Parton has exceeded everyone's expectations except her own.

When Dolly finally got her foot in the door, her talent and focus catapulted her to the top of country charts, the pop world, and movie stardom. Yet her success came at a price. Shunned by many in Nashville who saw her ambition as a betrayal of her country music roots, Dolly became the target of death threats, lawsuits, and a judge who threatened to throw her in jail.

She nearly collapsed on-stage and later succumbed to depression that pushed her to the brink, but she refused to be counted out and came back stronger than ever developing Dollywood, the amusement park that became the economic engine of East Tennessee, and founding the Imagination Library that provides free books to children around the world. Her philanthropy to health organizations led to creation of the Moderna COVID vaccine. And, finally, she returned to her roots, recording bluegrass albums that became the most celebrated of her unparalleled 60-year career.

"A moving, captivating, beautiful debut! I can't wait for the whole world to read it." -- Jasmine Guillory, New York Times bestselling author of Flirting Lessons

A playwright must grapple with her difficult year and writer's block while falling for the single dad living next door in this emotional debut novel from Ashley Jordan. Eve Ambroise may be a rising star playwright, but her personal life is falling part. Desperate for a fresh start, she breaks up with her fiancé, cuts off her parents, and heads to the Tennessee mountains. But keeping up the lie that she's just on a writing retreat becomes near impossible when faced with the well-meaning townspeople and a neighbor who has just as much baggage as she has.

Coming off a contentious custody battle, Jamie Gallagher is restructuring what his life looks like as a single dad, and spending more days at his cabin makes his new "free time" a little less empty. Especially when he meets the beautiful--and prickly--woman next door. The last thing he needs is a new romance to shake up his family dynamics even more, but there's something about Eve.

What starts out as a fling quickly becomes more serious, and it's not long before Eve is running scared once again. She's loved and lost in every possible way, and risking it one more time could finally break her. But like the fireflies that fill the mountains around them, Jamie's and Eve's lives keep falling into sync. A fairy-tale ending could be in the cards, but only if the new couple can get out of their heads and put their hearts first.

Nonfiction Books for Dolly Parton Fans

After Dolly Parton passed away, I saw an interview with Julia Roberts. She tells a story about sitting on the front porch with Dolly while they're filming Steel Magnolias in the middle of a heat wave in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Roberts tries to get Dolly to complain about wearing wigs and wool in the unbearable heat, and all Dolly said is, “When I was a little girl, I wanted to be famous and I wanted to be rich, and now I'm both of those things. I'm not going to complain about it.” We could all use a little more of Dolly's positive energy, especially when life gets tough.

She Come by It Natural: Dolly Parton and the Women Who Lived Her Songs

by Sarah Smarsh

isbn: 9781982157296,template: list

In this Time Top 100 Book of the Year, the National Book Award finalist and New York Times bestselling author of Heartland "analyzes how Dolly Parton's songs--and success--have embodied feminism for working-class women" (People).

Growing up amid Kansas wheat fields and airplane factories, Sarah Smarsh witnessed firsthand the particular vulnerabilities--and strengths--of women in working poverty. Meanwhile, country songs by female artists played in the background, telling powerful stories about life, men, hard times, and surviving. In her family, she writes, "country music was foremost a language among women. It's how we talked to each other in a place where feelings aren't discussed." And no one provided that language better than Dolly Parton.

In this "tribute to the woman who continues to demonstrate that feminism comes in coats of many colors," Smarsh tells readers how Parton's songs have validated women who go unheard: the poor woman, the pregnant teenager, the struggling mother disparaged as "trailer trash." Parton's broader career--from singing on the front porch of her family's cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains to achieving stardom in Nashville and Hollywood, from "girl singer" managed by powerful men to self-made mogul of business and philanthropy--offers a springboard to examining the intersections of gender, class, and culture.

Dolly Parton's Billy the Kid Dances His Heart Out

by Dolly Parton - MacKenzie Haley - Erica S Perl

isbn: 9780593755020,template: list

The New York Times bestselling series starring everyone's favorite French bulldog, Billy the Kid, is back! Featuring lyrics to an original song by Dolly Parton, this heartwarming story follows Billy as he ruffs it out on the dance floor ... and falls for his cute dance teacher.

Billy the Kid has done it all. He's moved to Nashville, formed a band, and rocked from coast to coast. But there's one thing Billy hasn't done...dance on stage. Dancing makes him nervous. And dancing in front of an audience? No way.

That all changes when Billy and his band nab an exciting gig as the opening act for Dolly Parton's Doggy Dance Pawty. Now, Billy is roping his friends into dance lessons. On the first day, he watches dogs whirl and twirl. But one dancer stands out: his dance teacher, Bella, who is as graceful as she is beautiful, with her auburn curls and a voice as sweet as pie.

Soon, Billy is trying to win Bella's attention. But that's difficult when he's stumbling through dance moves and tripping over his paws. Can Billy nail the dance routine and catch Bella's eye, all before the big dance pawty?

Uplifting and lighthearted, this loving picture book about the importance of trying new things and putting your best paw forward is one the whole family will enjoy.
