Classic and Modern Female-Led Mysteries to Read Next

What female detective books started your love of true crime podcasts, Only Murders in the Building and crime documentaries? For many readers it was in the pages of a Nancy Drew novel. The teenage sleuth was bold, intelligent and independent, driving around town in her blue roadster looking picture perfect as she took down her classic criminals.

Of course, Nancy Drew was only one of several book series about female detectives. From the first books by Agatha Christie to the newly published Lucy Foley novels, there's a whole universe of female detective novels who take investigations into their own hands, rather than wait for the men to stumble upon an answer.

Whether you are an old-school fan of mysteries and detective novels or are just diving into the genre, there are hundreds of cases to solve and female detectives to love. Here are a few of our favorite female detective book series to add to your bookshelf.

1. Miss Marple by Agatha Christie (continued by Lucy Foley)

The sweet and sharp-witted Miss Marple is both the oldest and most recently published female detective on the list. Originally created by one of the greatest mystery authors of all time, Agatha Christie, in 1930, Marple’s final novel was Sleeping Murder in 1976. Exactly 50 years later, in September 2026, Marple returns in Murder at the Grand Alpine Hotel. The continuation of this classic female detective’s story now falls to beloved modern mystery author Lucy Foley.

Why you'll like her: Marple books combine cozy mystery settings with a satisfying mental puzzle. She's constantly underestimated and solves crimes by simply paying close attention to details.
