There is so much magic inside of Adrienne Young’s new novel, The Unmaking of June Farrow. Our titular heroine knows at least a little bit about her destiny. She is one generation in a line of women who move throughout time, forward and back, navigating all that comes with life — but with a bit more mystery, a bit more uncertainty, a bit more grit.
Not long before the death of her dear grandmother, June begins to find herself getting swept up in strange occurrences. Once brushed off as simple (though no less unsettling) hallucinations, following her Gran’s passing, June starts to look more closely at an apparently real red door that has appeared in plain sight on a few occasions. She finally takes a chance, and steps through that door. What she finds on the other side sets her life sideways.
As June begins to put the pieces together, and begins to understand all of the many layers that make up her life, her history, and her future, she begins seeking more answers. She seeks answers about an unsolved disappearance, clarity about her chances at true love, confirmation of her abilities as a mother. As she explores all of this and more, we’re swept along for the journey, fervently flipping pages, realizing that we, too, are desperate to know it all.

June’s favorite dinner dish is chicken and dumplings. As we’re heading into well into winter we’re leaning into the wholesome and hearty goodness of it, with this version from the Cozy Cook. Perfectly cooked chicken, easy drop dumplings, plenty of veg — it feels a little like chicken pot pie, and we’re here for it.
For our wine this week, we’re going to help make your wine collection tastier — and prettier. One of our favorite elements of The Unmaking of June Farrow is the abundance of flowers. With that, pick up either a bottle of J. Lohr Wildflower Valdiguie or Loveblock Sauvignon Blanc. The Sauv Blanc is quite typical of the grape, but also a little extra, well, floral. It will pair beautifully with the chicken. The Valdiguie is a grape that’s newer to us, but we’re hooked — and very interested in checking out more of it! You’ll want to lend this one a little chill (not unlike the little chill that comes with the events of the novel).
